Survey Reveals the UK’s Most Popular Home Improvements

More people are investing in home improvements rather than moving house. It’s a cost-effective way to improve your property without the hassle and financial costs of finding a new home. A YouGov survey has shown the most popular home improvements.

Kitchens and Gardens

Top of the list is a kitchen makeover, which took 22% of the vote. A redesigned garden was second on the wish list at 20%. Kitchens tend to be one of the rooms which add value to a property, so it is a worthwhile investment. Many people like to cook and chat to the family, so putting in a breakfast bar or converting the space into a kitchen-diner makes sense. Also think about patio doors or floor-to-ceiling windows to let in a lot of natural light and create an indoor-outdoor living space with the garden. Gardens are versatile areas, as they can be outdoor dining spaces, playgrounds for the children, house a home office in the form of a shed or be a blank canvas for colourful plants, herbs or a vegetable patch.

Dream Improvements

If money was no object, then 26% of people taking part in the survey said they’d love their own swimming pool. A further 11% said they would like a ‘statement’ shed, which is useful as extra living space, a den or a home office.

The Only Way Is Up

Improving the bathroom or adding an extension also found favour in the survey. As well as extensions, many people wanted a loft conversion, which is a useful way of gaining more space without eating into the garden or outside areas. Most lofts are suitable for conversion and can easily create an extra bedroom, bathroom, teenage den or home office. Improve, Don’t Move

Many home owners are improving or extending their properties rather than moving house. Some 63% feel there is greater value in improving rather than moving, according to a YouGov survey.

Home improvements will add value to your home when you do decide to sell up. In the meantime, you get to enjoy a more beautiful living environment inside and out as well as more space if you opt for a loft conversion, extension or ‘statement’ shed.
