Clinical Trials

We are hearing a lot about clinical trials in the media at the moment. Trials underway to test new drugs are normally completed in four phases. Should a treatment be successful in the first stage, it will pass to phase II and so on followed by a study conducted after approval by regulators.

Pre-clinical phases of a drug or device involves testing on non-human cells that provide information about how effective it is, the problem of toxicity and how this impacts the drug or device.

Phase I involves the testing of drugs on healthy human volunteers in a clinical trial, with small doses at first and subsequent increases in the dose further on but still at lower than the therapeutic dose. A small group of healthy volunteers will be invited to the clinic for clinical trials, so that they can be observed around the clock. Sometimes labs need to move where the funding is. For Lab Relocation Services, visit a site like Aport Global, providers of Lab Relocation Services.

Phase II involves the testing of a drug or device on patients to whom the compounds might benefit to assess the efficacy and possible side effects. These patients will receive what is known as a therapeutic dose.

Phase III involves testing on patients to measure how effective it is and its safety. This phase involves a group of randomized patients to measure how useful this drug in everyday clinical practice. This measure is the part that takes the longest and is the most expensive of all the phases.

Stage IV is the stage after a drug or device has received approval by the regulatory board but continues to be monitored in the community.

Why Should your Company Have GPS Vehicle Tracking?

GPS tracking has revolutionised the world, and that includes the business world. All smartphone devices are now installed with GPS tracking, and one of the things that GPS tracking has brought to the world of business is fleet vehicle tracking. Here are some reasons why transport managers are using GPS tracking systems to track their fleet.

Being able to track where your vehicles are at any time is beneficial to you as a manager and to your customers. It allows you to help your drivers to manage and organise their day and it allows you to keep customers up to date and to deliver much better customer service when it comes to vehicles arriving at their destination.

You will be able to monitor the speed of your vehicles as well as their whereabouts. Cutting down on fines, as well as increasing road safety is a key reason why vehicle tracking is so valuable to businesses.

Vehicle security is another reason why it is helpful to have GPS tracking. If the vehicle is stolen it is easy to track, and signs on the vehicle stating that the vehicle is fitted with GPS tracking acts as a deterrent to potential thieves.

With vehicle tracking software, you can get a range of reports from the data that it provides you with. This can be used to manage your fleet in many ways, from improving your fuel efficiency, to changing routes to make them more economical, this is a wealth of information that is invaluable to any business running a fleet.

What Happens During a Cremation?

Although the only thing that you can be certain of in life, as the famous saying goes, is death and taxes, we, as a society have a reluctance to talk about death. Many of us have attended or even had to arrange a funeral at some point, with the help of professionals such as these Essex funeral directors, but within society it seems we do not treat death as a subject that we are happy to speak about.

This leads people to wonder about it, and the different aspects of the processes surrounding it, and one of the most popular questions is ‘what happens during a cremation’.

Despite the fact that the majority of funerals are cremations rather than burials in the UK it seems that we do not know a lot about what happens with cremation. Sometimes we have images in our head that are far more disturbing than the reality – so briefly, how does a cremation service happen…

The same way as a traditional service, the coffin is brought into the crematorium. The ceremony itself can be religious based or not, depending on the individuals wishes. A service lasts around 40 minutes and is similar to a church service in how it is done.

The mourners then leave the crematorium, and a curtain is drawn around the coffin. This is the part that many people fear that they will see the coffin go into the furnace, but that is a very old-fashioned process and it is no longer done in the UK. However, if you ask in advance a maximum of two relatives can witness the coffin go in if they should wish to.

The cremation is done on the same day, and the process takes around an hour and a half. Any metals (such as metal hip replacements) are removed with a magnet and recycled, and the ashes are placed in an urn to be passed on to the family. You can then place them in an urn of your choosing, you may have a grave to bury them in or take them to a special place to scatter them.

The New Cold War – Are we Once Again at Risk of Nuclear Destruction?

Throughout the Cold War, the two superpowers – the Soviet Union and the United States nearly started full nuclear exchange a few times – The tank standoff at Checkpoint Charlie (which seems unimaginable to us now when we can do tank driving for fun at https://www.armourgeddon.co.uk/tank-driving-experience.html ). Then only a year later came the Cuban Missile Crisis – the whole world watched with bated breath as the humanities survival seemed to hang by a thread. In 1983, Operation Able Archer, a NATO training exercise once again nearly sparked a nuclear exchange.

Since the fall of the Berlin Wall, it has seemed less and less likely that the world will end in a full nuclear exchange – indeed, it doesn’t seem to be at the forefront of public consciousness anymore as it once was. During the 1980s, pop culture, from film to music was ingrained with the grim realisation that we were very close to hearing the 4-minute warning.

But in recent years, the question has once again started to rear its ugly head. With tensions growing between Russia and the West as Russia continues to update its nuclear stockpile. In North Korea too, the current leader Kim Jong Un is seemingly obsessed with developing the nuclear missile program of the secretive state and with his hot temper is understandably a worry for the United Nations.

Then, over in America is the President Donald Trump – also hot tempered and unpredictable, and having a huge nuclear weapon stockpile at his disposal has also caused concern with his hot-headed reactions to North Koreas missile tests.

It seems that in these times a new cold war is back – hopefully it will diffuse as the last one did.

Areas that businesses forget to clean

After a winter stuck in the office with the heating on full blast and the windows closed, it can feel wonderful when the weather is nice again and it’s time to throw open the windows and let in fresh air. However, when the sun begins to penetrate the office, that’s when you start to pay attention to the winter dust and dirt built up. That’s why spring cleaning was invented!

A quick vacuum and dusting are not going to cut it, and often there are common areas in the workplace that can be overlooked during cleaning time.

  1. Behind the printer and copier

This area is almost always overlooked but can get very dusty from tiny particles released by the printer and paper.

  1. Skirting Boards

A thick layer of dirt and dust can build up on the edge of the boards from time to time, making them look grey and dirty. This dust could find its way into the air, worsening symptoms for those with hay fever, asthma or allergies.

  1. Office Chairs

If the back of the seat is much brighter than the front or you can see that it’s heavily stained; it may be time for a steam clean. The bottom of the seat and casters also get pretty dirty and could use a wipe down. Alternatively, get some Operator Chairs. See the Operator chair range at Best Buy.

  1. Lighting

Strip fluorescent bulbs will usually get full of dead insects and collect a lot of air borne dust and dirt. If the lighting you’re looking for a little faded and dusty, be sure to put it in the net you.

Details you need to supply your accountant

When it comes to the time to complete your tax return and the deadline fast approaching, it can be a frantic dash to the accountant with bags of receipts. Your accountant will not be grateful for this and what is likely to follow is a series of phone calls or emails asking you for additional information! For Accountants Swindon, visit a site like https://chippendaleandclark.com/

To make life easier for you and your accountant, here is some of the essential information they will need to create your account and tax returns:

Accounts

Your accountant will require all business account statements for the entire tax period, which starts from April 6 the previous year. You will most likely have a primary account, but if you also have a backup or a deposit account, they’ll need a statement for them as well, to follow every move between accounts. If you are still using a chequebook and paying in books, including these.

Statement of loans you have will also be required. It’s worth getting the balance at the end of the year as interest is tax deductible.

Statements for each business credit card are also required. If you have a personal credit card that you have used for business expenses, then do not forget to include this information as well.

Finance agreements taken during the year also need to be disclosed to your accountant. This can include hire purchase, for example. Mortgage interest is also tax deductible and anything you have purchased can also be submitted under the annual investment allowance. By not expressing it, you can add hundreds to your tax bill that is not necessary.

Payroll records must be produced, unless the accountant provides this service for you.

Tips for staying safe on the UK’s motorways

It might not seem like it but the motorways in the UK are statistically the safest roads. They only account for 3% of accidents and 4% of fatalities. Because of the fast speeds involved though, when something does go wrong, it can have very serious consequences. Here are some tips for staying safe on the motorways:

Entering

Moving from the slip road onto the motorway, always indicate right to give other road users a clear signal of your intention to merge. Try to match your speed with that of the lane you’re merging with and always find a suitable gap. It’s important not to slow down too much or come to a complete stop as such actions could be dangerous and frustrating to others.

Exiting

It’s important to be in the left lane in plenty of time and be aware of the 100-yard markings approaching every exit. Aim to turn on your indicator by the 300-yard marker. Try to avoid decelerating whilst still on the motorway but reduce speed on the slip road as this is safer. Often slip roads have more than one lane, so be sure to get into the correct one for your destination.

Be Aware

Drive safely past any roadside assistance vehicles, such as those marked with Chapter 8 Chevrons. Find out more at https://www.vehiclechevrons.com/

Knowing the lanes

The left lane is designed for travelling in, whilst the middle and right-hand lane are for overtaking. You should avoid staying too long in either of these lanes and remaining in the middle lane is now an offence.

Why install double glazing?

If you are considering renovating or updating your home, then you should give some thought to double glazing if you haven’t already installed it. Modern glazing brings a variety of benefits and, of course, adds value to your property.

For those who live by a noisy road or right on top of your neighbours, it can mean suffering from a significant level of noise pollution. Double glazing provides beneficial insulation from noise, lowering the noises that permeate your home. Having double glazing fitted to the living room and the bedroom can lead to a much quieter existence. For Hereford Double Glazing, Firmfix are able to provide double glazing in Hereford

Contemporary double glazing is extremely low maintenance. It is simple to clean with ordinary glass cleaner and sills can be wiped over with small amounts of soapy water. You can also enjoy easy-clean features, providing you with cleaner windows than ever before without you having to lift a finger.

Older glass with a single panel can weaken over time and if your home is decades old then it may be time for an update.

If you want to own a home that’s more energy efficient, double glazing is the way forward. A lot of air can escape through an old window, letting the heat out and the cold in, making your heating work harder and costing you more money. Just one additional pane can make a huge improvement. Better thermal insulation can save quite a lot on your energy bills during the year.

Asbestos linked deaths reach a high level

It has been known for many years that asbestos fibres breathed in as dust can lead to severe health problems and even death. Unfortunately, due to the material’s fire retardant properties, it has been used in a wide variety of buildings, and construction work that may require the use of Used Plant Machinery. It is important to be able to recognise and safely dispose of any asbestos that you come across.

A time bomb set to explode

Cancers stemming from exposure to asbestos can take decades to present themselves, with the sufferers often dying agonizing deaths. In 2017 more than two and a half thousand deaths were recorded from mesothelioma, where the linings of various organs are affected. This cancer is generally caused by breathing in asbestos fibres and is usually fatal.

The Health and Safety Executive forecast that deaths caused by mesothelioma will continue at this rate for a number of years, with an eventual decline. The use of brown and blue asbestos for insulation or fire proofing was banned in 1985. White asbestos, thought to be less harmful, was not banned until 1999. It was known that asbestos exposure could lead to debilitating respiratory conditions by the conclusion of the 19th century.

Children at risk

But it is not just construction workers who are at risk of health problems related to inhaling asbestos. Asbestos was also used in schools, and hundreds of schools are believed to be affected, which could have a serious impact on thousands of children’s health. To find out more, see this report in The Guardian (https://www.theguardian.com/education/2019/jul/04/700-english-schools-reporting agted-over-asbestos-safety-concerns).

If dealing with asbestos, vigorous safety measures must be observed. A spiral duct system can be invaluable for efficiently removing harmful dust from work areas, protecting staff and ensuring the safety of the construction area.

A great deal of asbestos was also used in buildings in Australia, which with the UK, also has a high rate of deaths from mesothelioma. Asbestos poses great risks to the health of anyone exposed to it, and removing it is of vital importance. However, dust produced when asbestos is disturbed can be fatal, and stringent preparation and safety precautions are required for anyone working in an area that has been contaminated by asbestos.

One magical castle for sale

Hello! Welcome to Fantasyland Estate Agents, I understand you’re in the market for a Castle or Schloss/Chateau if you prefer the “continental” type. Anything in particular? I’ve got a nice Ice one that’s just come on, the owner has moved out and decided to let it go. Too cold? Well I’ve a couple a couple of Towers available, they come as a Twin set, bit desolate and one is definitely a fixer upper, but I have some great contacts at a Roofers Romford way. Can I take a name? Baron Hadrada Von Darkspear? Right, I think that you might like this rather evil one that’s a steal, almost literally in your case.

Ok, so this is the lair of the Evil Queen. You remember her? Tried to do in Snow White? Never trust a step mother in our world eh? Eh? Almost as bad as a Grand Vizier Its 4 receptions rooms, 18 bedrooms, dining room and torture chamber stroke spell room, cauldrons still in there too if you want it. Let’s have a look the front door, check out that portcullis and drawbridge, lovely stonework around the entrance, that’s a dread portal and a half am I right? Like it’s a screaming mouth or something, want to go in side? Abandon all hope and all that.

So, this is the courtyard, woah mind the spikes there. What do you think of this, Perfect for ensnaring “our hero” don’t you think? It’s got some nice space for a wild animal or vicious creature to be released. Varying degrees of size to so you can mix and match it up a bit. Depends on your budget of course. Now let’s have look inside.

Ok so you’ve got your stand ballroom here, apart from the blood red flooring and the rather colourful paints of mayhem and violence, there’s the antique crystal chandeliers, I’ve got a great contact if you’d like to see more of them by the way although I would check with a Roofers in Romford first to make sure the roof can take the weight. Well it’s downstairs for the torture chamber stroke spell room or we can look in the master bedroom and the observatory? Upstairs, yes ok good choice.

Nice four poster, as you’d expect, shame about the gargoyles and the figures in pain on it but there’s no accounting for taste is there. Right well that’s pretty much it. Just the battlements, nice view up there, you can survey all the blasted heath that comes with the property. It’ll be impassable for any would be hero who fancies their chances. What’s that chief? What’s under that blanket? I’m not completely sure, better leave it where it is if I were you. It might be, no! Don’t take off the blanket. Oh, great that’s done it. It’ll be all “who’s the fairest of them all” etc. Bad news that mirror is. Well, it’s 50,000 groats for the lot, what do you say?

For other fairy-tale castles take a look here.
