How to make your meetings more positive

Here are some tips to help you make your meetings more productive and positive. Over a third our working life is spent in meetings. Of that, an estimated half of it is wasted. Here’s what you can do to change that:

When people arrive for meetings, their minds are usually full of the things they have just done. Start with a positive tone. Share a joke or funny story, do a fun activity.

Select the location with care – Be sure that your meeting space is suitable for its purpose. It’s impossible to create an atmosphere that is positive and comfortable if people are physically uncomfortable. Plan your agenda carefully – The main goal of most meetings is to come up with a plan of action. Our brain releases dopamine when we are asked a specific question. It helps us form our thoughts and prepares us to take action. Try replacing the information and statements in your agenda with questions that you feel need to be explored and solved on the subject at hand.

Focus on the strengths of people – Before the meeting, think about the people who will attend and shape the meeting according to their strengths. We are 6 times more likely than not to feel positive and engaged when we have the chance to use our own strengths. Consider what people can do to show what they are good at.

Growth opportunities are a great way to motivate people. If you want them to attend your meeting, give them something that they would not get if they did not. Invite a guest speaker to your meeting, or reveal new discoveries in the industry.
