The Rise of the Doomsday Bunkers

For the last few years the feeling that the end is nigh, has certainly increased – news reports of climate change problems such as huge forest fires, devastating flooding and deadly storms, worrying nuclear weapons programmes and now a global pandemic – it is not something that many people can ignore.

Because of all of this, there has been an increase in so called ‘Doomsday Preppers’ – once a small group, they are now gaining in numbers as people start to take the threat of a worldwide disaster more seriously.

One of the most common things that people who prepare for an apocalypse do is build a bunker – something that we had considered part of a bygone age, firs the Anderson shelters of the Second World War and then the underground bunkers of the Cold War. Since the early 90s, many fell into rack and ruin, just relics of a threat that was no longer there.

Today life sadly seems to be heading back down the same road once more – prepping is incredibly popular now, with internet sites, groups and message boards dedicated to this very subject, as well as people considering building their own bunkers once again.

To build a bunker, first you need to find somewhere to put it – the map shop planning maps will be able to help you to find a suitable location to begin with. If it is something that you are serious about, you will also need to research the systems that you will need in place withing the bunker – after all you will need a generator for electricity, and a way to get clean air and water into your bunker.
